Artists I Perform With
- Andy Gurley
- Andy is a superb guitarist in just about any style you can name. We've known each other for years and have played in a few bands together. He's gone on to great success in Nashville as a freelance guitarist, studio musician, producer, songwriter, teacher, and in artist development. He's currently the lead guitarist for hot country duo Blue County. One of the cool things about moving back to Nashville is that I get the chance to play with him!
- Scotch Hollow
- I play upright bass and sing harmonies with this spooky country-blues-goth-punk band ... hard to assign a genre to this one, but it's a fun band!
- The Brian James Band
- Brian is a hot guitarist and singer in the style of Stevie Ray Vaughn, John Mayer, and Jimi Hendrix. I have a blast playing electric bass with him.
- Peter Spencer
- In addition to being a standout fingerstyle guitarist in a number of styles (from ragtime to blues to rock to you name it), Peter is a great singer / songwriter, and a great electric guitarist as well. I played for him when I lived in Seattle, and play with him when he hits Nashville on tour. Check him out, buy his CDs, and go hear him if you get the chance!
Artists I Have Performed With
- Holly Figueroa
- An amazing singer-songwriter on Cake Records. I had the honor of playing for her when I lived in Seattle, and will happily play with her when she comes through the Nashville region on tour. Check out her website, listen to her tunes, buy her CDs, and go see her anytime you can!
- Rachel Harrington
- I've appeared with Rachel once on upright bass. She's great alt-country singer. Check out her site, and look for her CD coming soon!
- Susan Welch
- Susan is a great singer / songwriter / mandola player who lets me play her wonderful music with her sometimes. Check her out, and buy her CD!
Other Great Artists
- The Legendary Shack Shakers
- An amazing band of Hell-billies from my homeland of Kentucky and Tennessee. Check 'em out! My best friend "Fast" Layne Hendrickson has a song on their latest album. Seriously, this is an amazing band ... you wouldn't believe their live show if you haven't seen it before. Josh Wilkes just stuns ...
- Blue County
- A great country duo, who had both a top 10 ("Good Little Girls") and a top 20 ("That's Cool") single off their first album. They're great guys, plus my friend Andy Gurley is their lead guitarist (he's amazing). They put on a fantastic show ... check 'em out if they're ever in your area!
- Halie Loren
- Halie is a great singer / songwriter from Eugene, OR, whom I met at a showcase gig at this year's Rockrgrl magazine conference. We're hoping to get the chance to play together one of these days. Check out her site and listen to her tunes ... Great Stuff! Oh, and you may notice that she is rather devoted to her piano ... ;)
Gear I Use
- Genz Benz Amplification
- Home of some the best bass amplification products around. I use the NeoPak 3.5 head and either a Neox112t or a Neox212t cabinet, depending on the situation.
- Pedulla Basses
- I love Pedulla basses! When I'm not playing my 'traditional' 4 string fretless and fretted Fender Precision basses, I play a Pedulla MVP 6 string, a Hexabuzz 6 string fretless, and a Rapture 5 string fretless.
- Fender Basses
- What can I say? The classic. I play a '62 Reissue Precision Bass, and a fretless Precision conversion with a Warmoth neck.
Stores
- Bass Northwest
- The best bass store on the planet (that's bass, the musical instrument, not bass, the fish ...). I've known the owners, Evan and Chad, since 1990 or so. They and the rest of the staff will treat you right and give you a great price on great gear.
- Hammond Ashley Violin Shop
- The best shop around here for double bass stuff. My current main upright, a Strunal 5/21 hybrid, is from them. They are extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. They also have a large inventory and a great rental program which lets you apply 100% of your first year's rent to purchasing any bass in the store.
- Gollihur Music
- Bob Gollihur runs a great online store focusing on all your double bass needs. Actually, it's sort of limiting to call it a 'store' ... it's more like a wonderful research and information site where you can also buy things. And if you call, you'll talk to Bob or his son, both of whom are great guys and active bassists themselves.
Other Links
- Oak Level Forge
- My best friend, retired blues guitarist / singer "Fast" Layne Hendrickson, is now a blacksmith. This is a link to his site, the Oak Level Forge. Fascinating ...
Since his retirement from the music biz, he's had a song recorded by the Shack Shakers, played banjo for a movie soundtrack, and is playing banjo on the Shack Shakers' next album. As he said to me recently, "Damn, I should have retired a lot sooner!"
- Full Circuit Sound
- Eddie Williams does a great job with sound reinforcement and both mobile and studio recording. He recorded the live version of 'Midnight With Mingus' on my music page, and I think he did a fantastic job of capturing the tone and nuances of my bass and amp. Also, on his sound page there's a link to his music page: Eddie's also a very talented singer / songwriter ... check it out!
